Maharashtra State had no Sanskrit University before 1997. The former Prime Minister of India, Hon'ble Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao, who is a great scholar of Sanskrit, always insisted that Maharashtra has a great tradition of Sanskrit learning hence it should have an independent University. The University was established on 18th September 1997. The place Ramtek, which is a township in Nagpur district, was selected because it is connected to the name of the great poet of the world Kavikulaguru Kalidas. KKSU is unique and entirely different from all the existing Sanskrit Universities in academic nature. While other Sanskrit Universities cater for traditional learning in Sanskrit like Veda, Vedanta, Vyakarana, Nyaya, Mimamsa Dharmashastra and Sahitya etc. KKSU has innovative academic programme and syllabus with modern subjects associated with traditional Sanskrit. Every course has Sanskrit as the compulsory subject, which is taught in combination with the most modern subjects like Travel Tourism, Market Management, Human Resource Management etc. To facilitate double gain for the candidates, the university has converted I.A.S. M.P.S.C. curriculum into Degree Course having Sanskrit as an important subject. The University offers ATKT, Grace Mark, Condonation Marks to candidates which helps in encouraging them to pursue their Sanskrit studies. On one hand, the courses emphasise modernity and on the other hand, they strive to preserve tradition. All the courses of K.K. Sanskrit University are consultancy-oriented. The University has the special emphasis on Science and Technology in ancient India as preserved in the Sanskrit texts. The University has an open door system to remove different unnecessary technicalities. At all levels, the condition of knowledge of Sanskrit as pre-requisite for admission has been removed. This system encourages many curious candidates from different streams to turn to take Sanskrit studies who earlier could not study Sanskrit because of faculty barriers. The University has multi-campuses with its main campus situated at Ramtek which is 48 km away from Nagpur city. The other campus is situated at Nagpur. One campus takes care of all the academic activities while other is devoted mostly to administrative activities.
